About City

Amsterdam is the financial, business and cultural capital of the Netherlands. The city is the largest in the country, has a population of just over 790.000 inhabitants. Amsterdam is located in the province North Holland, situated in the western Netherlands.

Global Status: Amsterdam is one of the most popular destinations in Europe, is considered as an alpha-world city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) study group. Many Dutch institutions and a number of the world's largest companies are based in Amsterdam or have established their European headquarters in the city. By the Economist Intelligence Unit, Amsterdam was ranked the second best city to live in and also ranked 12th globally on quality of living for environment and infrastructure by Mercer. The city was ranked 4th place in the world as top tech hub in the Savills Tech Cities 2019 report, and 3rd in innovation by Australian innovation agency. Amsterdam has the fifth largest port in Europe. Several fashion brands and designers are based in Amsterdam and it has a world class fashion centre. Famous Amsterdam people include the diarist Anne Frank, artists Rembrandt and Van Gogh, and philosopher Baruch Spinoza.

Transport: There are sixteen tram routes and five metro routes in Amsterdam. In the city all transport facilities like bus, train, cars are there. Amsterdam airport Schiphol is the largest airport in the Netherlands, the 3rd largest in Europe, and the 14th largest in the world in terms of passengers. Amsterdam is one of the large cities that are the most bicycle-friendly in the world and also is a centre of bicycle culture with good amenities for cyclists such as cycling paths and bike racks, and several guarded bike storage garages which can be used.

Education: Amsterdam has two universities: the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Other institutions for higher education include Gerrit Rietveld Academie (an art school), the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (a university of applied sciences), and the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. One of the world's largest documentary and research institutions concerning social history, and especially the history of the labour movement is Amsterdam's International Institute of Social History. Amsterdam has five independent grammar schools. Almost all secondary schools in Amsterdam offer a variety of different levels of education in the same school. The city also has various colleges that ranges from art and design to politics and economics which are also available for students coming from other countries. There are schools for foreign nationals in Amsterdam that include the Amsterdam International Community School, British School of Amsterdam, Albert Einstein International School Amsterdam, Lycée Vincent van Gogh La Haye-Amsterdam (French school), International School of Amsterdam, and the Japanese School of Amsterdam.

The city of canals: The city referred to as the “Venice of North” due to its large number of canals which are in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The canals are served for defence, as well as water management and transport.

Tourism: Amsterdam is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Europe. More than 4.63 million international visitors come to Amsterdam annually, excluding the 16 million day-trippers visiting the city every year. The attractions are the Rijksmuseum- the most important art repository where its collection includes some seven millions works of art, The Anne Frank Museum, The Van Gogh Museum, The Jordaan (neighborhood), Vondelpark, De Wallen (Red light district), Canals of Amsterdam, Dam Square, The Royal Palace, Rembrandt House Museum, The Botanical Gardens & the Zoo, The Old Church (Oude Kerk), The Stedelijk: Amsterdam's Municipal Museum, The Begijnhof, The Jewish Historical Museum, The New Church & the National Monument, Kalverstraat and Vlooienmarkt, The Amsterdam Museum, The Museum of the Tropics. Outside the city destinations for day trippers are Zaanse Schans Windmill, Markem and Volendam Half-Day Trip from Amsterdam.
