Lifestyle Diseases:

Lifestyle diseases referred to the dysfunctions associated with the way people live or spend their livelihood. Modern lifestyle is dependent on the increased rate of urbanization and civilization that effect on individuals eating habit, tendency of having junk foods, lack of exercise, drug abuse, desparacy, excessive intake of alcohol and smoking. Long duty hours in corporate sectors also plays role on health status of individual where individuals physical activity become much less. Kids now-a-days prefer to stick on smartphones and computers rather than going for outdoor games. These lead to heart diseases, stroke, obesity, diabetes (commonly type 2), arteriosclerosis, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic liver diseases, swimmer’s ear, nephritis, neurological disorders, cancer and premature mortality. So, for all, there is an urgent need of spreading the awareness about this underestimated issue at a global level.

Obesity and Diabetes:

Obesity is by means having too much body fat that affect on regular lifestyle. This is not same as being overweight only but weighing too much that puts people at a higher risk of getting serious diseases, such as diabetes, increased cholesterol level, cardiovascular diseases, liver damage and even cancer. Obesity mostly increases the chances of developing the common type of diabetes, type 2 diabetes. Obesity trigger the body’s metabolism rate and fat tissue releases fat molecules into blood. In such condition the body produce enough insulin but the specific body cells become resistant to the beneficiary action of insulin. There are some congenital diseases like Prader Willi Syndrome (PWS) where obesity is an important measure, but lifestyle changes can help these children lead a normal life even after being predisposed. It is important to educate people regarding its adverse outcomes.

Diet and Lifestyle:

A healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons to fight against lifestyle diseases. It is not as hard as people think, so it is the time to aware people about proper nutrition and diet and maintain a healthy life status.

Heart Problems:

There is a scale of cardiac diseases which occur because of unhealthy lifestyle, trans-fats and sodium rich diet, lack of sufficient physical activity, excessive intake of alcohol and tobacco. Though in certain cases genetics and family history is responsible for developing heart disease but some late-onset diseases also include heart function disorders which can be prevented by taking preventive measures. Hypertension, depression also results in cardiovascular diseases. Heart problem is the leading cause of death among all age groups and almost 17.7 million people die each year of cardiovascular diseases. Healthy diet, dedicated physical activity and surely regular health check-up can help people lead a normal life.

Lifestyle and Cancer:

Cancer is the most widespread disease of the era that is causing a large number of deaths globally and the number is being increased at an exponential rate. Several causes of cancer include- exposure to ultraviolet radiations, infectious agents, smoking, excessive intake of alcohol and other unhealthy practices. Some cancers, as example retinoblastoma are congenital too are sometimes dependent upon lifestyle. Some types of cancer can be prevented by avoiding smoking and alcohol, retaining a healthy weight, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, getting vaccination against certain infectious diseases and not consuming much processed food, red meat and avoiding too much exposure to direct sunlight.

Occupational Disorders-An Emerging Issue:

Occupational disorders are those that occur as a result of work or occupational activity and are usually identified when they are shown to be predominant in a group of workers than in the common people, or in other worker populations. These disorders basically include skin diseases, lung diseases, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders. Occupations like hairdressing, catering, printing, healthcare, metal machining, motor vehicle repair, mining and construction cause these diseases. These issues are emerging this time as people are not aware much about the adverse effect of it on their life. All those can be prevented and lowered with changes in food intake, maintaining regularity, standard of living and surroundings.

Hormonal Imbalance:

In the current scenario of stressful and busy life, human body are leading to an imbalanced measure of necessary hormones that generously control important physiological and psychological mechanisms. Certain diseases also involved in imbalanced hormonal levels which have visible and hidden symptoms. Dietary habits and sleep cycle influence hormonal levels directly which can also be easily observed in kids these days. Hormone influences almost all body functions, from growth and development to human behaviour. Thyroid, poly cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOD), growth disorders and sexual dysfunction are the major outcomes of hormonal disorders. These can all be controlled with proper dietary intake and regular exercise.

Mental Health-Depression:

Unhealthy lifestyle, addiction to drugs, sleep deprivation lead to brain disorders in directly or indirectly manner and might end up in severe neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, Epilepsy, Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and Migraines. Depression is now a common but serious temper disorder, severely affected by lifestyle, varies range among teenagers to aged people. The symptoms primarily are an affect on individual’s feelings, reflection, and handling daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. Persistent depressive disorder, postpartum depression, Psychotic depression, Seasonal affective disorder and Bipolar disorder are the basic type of depression. Counselling should be provided to the parents and family of the affected individuals. Healthy Walk and Yoga:

Regular yoga practice helps to build mental clarity and peaceful mind as well as increases body consciousness. Yoga helps to lower blood pressure and also lessen the insomnia effect. Physical benefits of yoga include- increased muscle strength, improved respiration, energy for work, a balanced metabolism, weight reduction, etc. In this era where we do not have time for long term exercises, we can stick to simple free hand exercises like yoga and pranayama.

Lifestyle Medicine-Concept and Impact:

Depending upon lifestyle and the environmental factors every people holds a unique body set up. Medicines are purposed to treat and cure diseases. In this matter the best cure or preventive measure for the diseases which come out of poor food habits, drug abuse and physical inactivity are referred to Lifestyle Medicine. Globally the lifestyle related diseases are not supportable and can’t be ignored. Lifestyle medicine generally includes individual based research, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the dysfunctions which are caused by poor lifestyle. Both at the professional and public levels proper awareness and education is required to live a healthy life.

To live a healthy life, some changes in lifestyle is required like maintain proper and regular eating habit, getting enough sleep, regular exercise, avoid smoking, drugs and alcohol intake. Moreover, to maintain a healthy weight measure, protecting from STDs are included in health care management. The actual purpose of healthcare is to enhance the quality of life by enhancing health. Health professionals have a central and critical role in making better access and quality health care for people, as well as people should be more aware about what lifestyle management is and how it should be maintained.
